I will try to garner more reasonable proof, as there are a ridiculous amount of troll trades up on outpost.
Also, go here if you are against key inflation, but have absolutely no proof to support your claims: http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/topic/1503-the-one-and-only-key-price-topic-no-flame-wars-please-discussion-only/
i had to ruin the moment when evryone forgot about them. thanks for reminding insta DOWNvote :C :p
i see many sellers for 5.22
but its in your range so ok
In the range
wow really i see no sellers at even 5.33 people sell for 5.55-6
of the 4 keys bought in the last 24 hours only 1 was at 5.55
5.22 is more central to the 5.11-5.33 range than the 5.22-5.44 range. :/
You are eliminating 5.11 from the range, so you also have to show that buyers are failing to buy at 5.11.
Just because you asked nicely...

I sold 44 keys at 5.66 yesterday, almost as many as this whole page of "counterproof" represents.
Thats still counterproof to his range -_-
To repeat, I am one person, and apparently I am selling as many keys above the range as all of outpost is selling at 5-5.11.
If you want to make the range 5-6, then sure, I guess his links support that. But 100 keys at 5 ref means literally nothing when one person can sell that many at a full rec above the range.
a screenshot would be nice
The reason u find more @ 5 than 5.11 is that people like round numbers. That's why it took so long to get off 5. 6 should come pretty fast now.
IF 6 ref comes along, that's outrageous. Keys should never have gotten this high. 3 ref was far enough. And you know why it's gone up? People that look at price suggestions with the "up" arrow next to the key and automatically think "Hey, one of my items in my backpack could be raised by 1 scrap :D" That shouldn't happen.
*Metal should never have gotten this low
FTFY
Key's are actually increasing as well, I just checked source-op, and people are buying/selling keys for more than $1.60(There appears to be numerous at around 1.70). This used to be around $1.3-1.4. Thus, I am lead to believe the whole "metal devaluing" is shenanigans. If metal is devaluing, why are paypal key prices increasing?
Evidence of my claims:
http://forums.sourceop.com/threads/144610-Keys-1-75 $1.75 selling
http://forums.sourceop.com/threads/144752-2x-TF2-keys-1-72-each
sold @ $1.72
http://forums.sourceop.com/threads/144339-Keys-1-80-USD-PayPal-each Selling @1.80
http://forums.sourceop.com/threads/142649-Keys-1-7-(-I-ll-pay-all-fee-) Buying at 1.70, no sellers
And so on. If someone wants more proof, just go to the forums
The paypal increase is a direct result of multiple large-scale carders being caught and having their accounts locked (carders are people who steal credit cards, buy keys, and then sell them cheap over PP to launder them).
With all those cheap keys off the market of course the price was going to go up.
It will only stop when it hits the $2.49 mark in value and it's actually more profitable to buy them from the Mann Co store to trade for them.
Trade.tf has it at 5.33 in item trading and they usually trail the key seller so this is likely accurate.
http://trade.tf/price/5021/6
good counter proof, downvote
Why All trades closed?
because they sold?
We need active links
why?? if you sell something you close the trade...
quicksellers
It's actually funny that counterproof is completely out of stock. And every buyer must be reselling them for 5.55 right now. Not hatin', just sayin'.
Good counter-proofs, downvoted.
How many times has it been said that Scrap.tf does not, and I repeat, NOT count as proof? Did Geel9 not say that he did not want his site to be justified for key suggestions?
The owners of the websites don't have any say in whether its usable as proof. That's like one of those people who puts up an outpost trade for below range and says "don't use this as bp.tf proof."
Scrap.tf and TF2F are terrible proof because of their automated nature and opaque processes, respectively. Don't say "Oh Geel9 said it wasn't okay" to ignore scrap.tf, use a real reason, of which there are many.
Wait...so tf2finance is now bad proof?
Nobody knows how they calculate their prices.
Except for people who can read :(
It's like magic.
It was never good proof.
And my comment that you warned was meant to be constructive, stop the spam, and putting in some humor at the same time
> automated nature
You understand the prices are set by a human? If they're buying for 5.22, it's because they couldn't maintain stock at 5.11.
> opaque processes
The tf2finance process has been thoroughly explained.
> Thoroughly explained.
No it hasn't. We still don't know how they magically see every trade that ever happens, and how they keep people from trading to alts to change their numbers.

I checked all those links. I found not one buyer for 5.44. I even double checked to make sure.
The buyer for 5.5 ref each (not 5.55 mind you) has no more metal. So that's probably the only proof out of those links.
Honestly, any buyer/seller links for 5.22 or 5.33 don't really support your proof. What you need are buyers failing to buy at 5.11, and sellers succeeding to sell at 5.44. So far, you only have a couple of those links.
If I'm trying to prove the range of 5.22 - 5.44, how does having links of buyers/sellers at 5.22 - 5.33 not support my proof? That statement is very puzzling.
I can't control the market, nor can I prove that not a single key is bought for 5.11 Refined. Mind you, 1000s of keys are traded every single day, so trying to prove that not a single key is sold/bought for 5.11 Refined is simply impossible. What I can do, however, is show you guys the average and what buyers and sellers are willing to pay for 1 Key, which is supported by my proof.
You're not just trying to prove the range of 5.33-5.44. You're also trying to prove that the current range is outdated. Trades at 5.22 and 5.33 are in the current range.

I like how childish our community is. They dislike comments with extra proof.
why would you possibly dislike extra proof. Kinda defeats the purpose of proof if you ignore new evidence
Exactly what I wanted to say-.
Sellers > Buyers. if its opposite we know somethings wrong. There are sellers willing to sell for 5 / 5.11 you cant just ignore them and put 5.22 because of buyers.
The only way that I've found possible to find these "willing sellers" is to constantly refresh the search page and pray that you are fast enough to add the person than everybody else is.
Also, I didn't only include 5.22 Buyers. There are 50+ 5.33 Buyers, and quite a few 5.44 Buyers
Then how come the expierenced traders have been easily getting it at 5-5.11 refined?
> experenced traders have been easily getting it at 5-5.11 refined?
Oh, experienced like me? I've done 1600 total trades this month and bought hundreds and hundreds of keys. I paid 5.33 for many and 5.44 for some.
Or like the scrap.tf bots, who can't maintain stock at 5.11 and have to pay 5.22?
Or like Puddington, who quicksells keys for metal sometimes and now charges 5.44 because there's no point charging any less?
You seem to forget that on Outpost, people are always trying to sell items above sell price, and buy below the buy price. Look on any "key shop" They charge about 5.33-5.44, but buy keys at 5-5.11. This is kind of just proof that people are overly greedy.
hmm can you add my post as proof for the key price have to raise?
my post : http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11297823
This isn't at all constructive, please leave or provide some counterproof before you comment.
Good proof, I support this suggestion.
5.11, correct. 5.22-5.33 is in his range and can be counted as proof.
He doesn't need to show it being impossible at 5.22 or 5.33 since they are in his new range and are in the old range. Really all the matters is showing that 5.11 is impossible, and that nobody is buying at 5.66 while they now have started to buy at 5.44 and 5.55.
Personally, this is an upvote for me because aside from all the good proof, I'm a quickbuyer and I set my price at 5.11. I have gotten zero adds in a week and I bump it all the time. I have even trolled through the search queue on Outpost clicking refresh every 5 seconds on occasion to find quicksellers and I can't even get any at 5.11. Those at 5.22 are snatched up immediately. Even at 5.33-5.44 when I list mine for sale I get adds within minutes.
some traders buy for 5.66, just not the average person.
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/10976952
I sold a key for 5.66 a week ago..wasn't expecting it
I've seen some sold at 6 Refined. The market is very inept in finding legitimate trades, especially now more than ever.
What's the point of raising and raising the key price? Nothing is going to change or get better since all of these traders just keep wanting to make profit. I don't care if you guys don't agree. When keys were only 2.33 ref, it was still expensive and hard to acquire. The tf2 economy back then was somewhat stable. Now, it's falling apart. Are you guys sure you want to ruin it just to get a little cash in your pocket?
Backpack.tf doesn't actually change the value of anything. This website only reports on current trades to keep its information up to date.
I would beg to differ.
Here's one from Baloo:
>Allow me to illustrate for you what you appear to not be able to comprehend. These items sell in a time-vector as well. You cannot use a screenshot of market to fully illustrate prices unless you factor in this time vector. Using the average trade prices graph courtesy of http://trade.tf, you can clearly see the influence backpack.tf price changes have on a market and the consequences that occur when you do not allow a recovery time to view how the market reacts.

So if I read that correctly keys are in a constant state of hype and the continuing suggestions without "cooldown" time beetween them increases said hype? If so that makes complete sense.
You suggested that Backpack.tf doesn't actually change the value of anything.
I meant BP.tf isn't the only reason prices change and that it requires people to disagree with the reported price... I think... I'm just going to shut up now. Have a nice day.
And that's why the key prices don't make sense, because the hype does not cool down, and their is no reason for the prices to raise, other than seeing the same people trying to raise the price because they are not patient enough to look for better prices on Outpost.
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is what happens when you let a bunch of pixels control your life.
If you truly do not care about a bunch of pixels, then why does your backpack consist of a bunch of stranges? Why go out of your way to spend much, much more for stranges when you could simply have the unique versions of the weapons instead? This goes doubly for the Strange Festives you have in your backpack since you could easily buy the cheaper strange variant of them.
Practice what you preach.
I have stranges because I like using them. It is substansially different from currency items like keys, which generally gets the volatile HERP DERP treatment, and every single time you are given the same tired explanations as to why the market is what it is, and pretty much looking the other way instead of staring in the face.
You want someone who let a bunch of pixels run his life? Long218. You know how much of a pain he is to deal with , and pretty much the entire community hates him because of his history, stemming from letting a bunch of pixels run his life. What happened to him should be a cautionary tale of what happens when you let the economy aspect of the game suck out any enjoyment from playing the game.
But I digress, since I have gone off topic.
I prefer to play the game for enjoyment, and not go through the taxing trivialities that essentially is what the market morphed into, which for some reason people enjoy more than the game themselves.
Quote:
<< stemming from letting a bunch of pixels run his life. >> as if some raging guys in comments would RUIN A LIFE. LOL. your the one who takes this too serious dude
RiS, you completely missed the argument here.
Unless you have been under a rock for the past few months, you'd understand why I made the comment that I did.
patient? Some of us don't care about the raise. I bought keys for 5.44 weeks ago, I don't worry about a couple little scrap.
Thus begins the ignorant comments. This suggestion was created to reflect the market, not crash it. If you would like to complain, go to the forums.
http://forums.backpack.tf
There are many, many reasons why keys are rising in price. Hint: It's not 100% trader greed.
Because, my dear ignorant player, It's not about price manipulation. I think it's idlers, but I cant be sure so I'm not drawing conclusions. Its not cus we want to get rich.
What's the point of people trying to artificially induce them to go down? Keys ARE selling at 5.33+, and the only reason why those suggestions aren't getting accepted is because people are resisting. The suggestion for 5-5.55 that Cleverpun made SHOULD have been accepted, but everyone was like "hur hur save teh keys 5.55 to high" without providing appropriate counterproof.
Oh? Do you have counterproof to back up that claim?
but but i wanted to make this :C
Anyway, i will stay neutral a day or two to see if the links are insta taken
Okay for those of you who lack simple logic and common sense... backpack.tf values 1 refined metal at $0.35.
A key on the market is roughly $2.20 at the moment.
Currently the price of keys in ref is 5.11 - 5.33.
Now, if 1 ref is $0.35 that means 5 ref is $1.75.
And if 1 scrap is ($0.35/9) $0.04 that means the current range of 5.11 - 5.33 translates to $1.79 - $1.87.
Trader greed is not the only cause of keys going up in ref. In fact, selling your keys on the market is way more profitable...
The way I see it, keys aren't inflating... their price in ref is just lagging behind the actual market price. And they'll continue to catch up until keys are worth AT LEAST $2.10 in ref... so what is that in ref?
$2.10/$0.35 = 6 ref.
I hope that made sense.
tl;dr keys are still cheap in ref
I don't know where you get your prices. You can easily get keys for $2.09 at tf2shop.net, or even $1.80 from many PayPal buyers. And 1.8/.35= 5.14, which in the lower end of the current range (5.11-5.33).
Tl;dr: Keys reflect today's market price, and the market price will actually go up to match the ref price.
I got my prices from TF2shop and the community market.
You're right about the PayPal buyers though.
Comunity market sellers pay a fee, selling for $1.8 plus fees makes $2
They were selling at ~$2.20 when I last checked/time of posting.
backpack can just adsjust their metal price down if necessary...
If they lower the price of metal, keys would just continue to rise in metal, won't they? Because it would cost more metal to buy a key.
some people still buy for 5.11 like me 3
doesn't matter if you buy them for that price, proof you have bought any or leave.
Please feel free to provide screenshots of these transactions if you wish to more effectively contribute to this conversation. Based on the comments on your outpost trade: http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/10626285, the last time you bought a key for 5.11 refined was May 18th. Not to mention the irony in this since you posted that trade on May 7th, the day after the price suggestion for 5-5.11 refined was accepted.
Well no shit, everyone buys at 5.11. But do people SELL to you for 5.11? If so, please provide us with proof that they do.
The robo-update has taken away market interest in keys, And your proof has a lot more buyers at 5.22 and 5.33 then the 5.44 mark.
All in range.
Hey, I'm link number 4. It's quite easy to sell for 5.44, I get adds pretty much every day wanting to buy for that price.
Thanks for the info. I haven't sold any at 5.44 Refined, but the trades that I do see seem to be bought fairly quickly.

Okie dokie lokie. I found some counterproof. It's all the way up there. Somewhere. Ok. Yep just telling you. So, you know, you won't be disappoint.
Thanks for contributing :)
Too lazy to disprove this the real way soo..
- You can get new Keys by trading other items than just refined metal(!)
- "Buying for 5 Refined" Cool, they didn't buy a single key.
- Trades with comments of sellers are 1 week old.
So yeah, this isn't counterproof.
One can make that assumption when the last comment was 2 days old
The only reason this price is going up is that people sell it for more to make a profit, and then others bump up the price even more, creating an endless loop of price increase.
Hmm... or maybe because of supply and demand, Community Market Place, idlers?
I don't think idlers affected much to tf2 economy. We had idlers who has UNLIMITED item drops before the mannconomy update came out. (or some other update). Community Market place or TF2Shop or Paypal take your pick. Supply and demand?...probably that.
Keys have ALWAYS had a high supply and demand, it hasn't changed much.
Community market, if anything, would lower the price of keys, since it would make it easier to retrieve them.
Idlers would effect the economy, IF it wasn't rare to get an item drop that wasn't a weapon or crate.
Why is that any of our business? Backpack.tf's job is to create price guidelines that reflect on how much keys are selling for, not bitch about how high the prices are.

ALL THE COUNTERPROOF IS 1 DAY OLD FROM TIME OF POSTING.
Let's see how many of these are available for purchase.
Oh, none. Yeah.
Range should include the price you'll pay for a key if you buy one right now.
Oh yeah. 5.33 is nearly impossible too. Let's get rid of that from the range as well.
Also, many people are WILLING to sell for 5-5.11 ref.
I can buy one for 6 ref right now. Should 6 ref be in the range?
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11311126 well 1 simple refresh brought me this
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11311221 2 refreshes brought me this
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11311314 dayum, are people getting less greedier?
Each of those were open for less than a minute. How about you tell us the number of refreshes it took to build your list of "representative" samples? I would guess a thousand+ to get those 3 trades, and tens of thousands to get the bigger list
And yesterday I sold 44 keys at 5.66, a larger sample than all of your "counterproof" put together (the Chipson trades don't count, you can see him buying at 5 ref in one trade and selling for 4 in another, clear market manipulation)..
Well then tell me naknak, how come you posted added on many of the 5-5.22 key sellers hmm? Doesn't seem too hard to buy at that price does it. And this list took me 10 minutes to make. Also, it doesn't matter how fast they were sold, it matters how MANY were sold, and all those were trades in 1 single day.
It's actually very hard. Look at how many adds people get from selling a key at 5 Refined. If you look into those people who bought some, you can see them selling for way higher, or even buying for higher.
As for it took you 10 minutes to make that list, at the time of posting, many of those trades were closed many hours ago. Explain
Yeah exactly, out of hundreds of keys I'm getting maybe 10% at 5.22, and I put much, much more effort into cheap keys than most people will.
I bought at least twice as many keys at 5.44 as I found at 5.22, and I was still making profit at that price. 5.44 was the cheapest I could find at those times, and it's not even in the current range!
The idea that ordinary traders, or even "experienced" traders can buy at 5.22 easily is absurd.
Uh....trade.tf.
The number of Keys which are sold by a single person matters. Most of them only sell one key, because they quickly need some exchange.
I'd pay 2.33 for a key right now
Hey guys let me make a suggestion where the range includes 2.33
Ideally it'd be 2.33 - 5.44
And you'd fail to buy one at that price. I mean the price you'd pay to successfully buy one, obviously.
Don't make me screenshot my bot's 100+ bought @ 5.44ref, sold @ 5.55ref in the last 14 hours >.>
Bots are not reliable evidence; people pay for convenience.
That is the entire reason scrap.tf is not good key proof
But these walls of links showing the cheapest 1% of keys over the last 3 days, those are good proof? They add to the discussion in a useful way?
Your claim that people pay more to deal with bots is not borne out by my own key-selling experience.
scrap.tf get abnormal prices, maybe (actually not), because they are a big name, but every random bot with an ad on outpost is bucking the whole market?
That is an extraordinary claim to be making on intuition alone. I think you should support it somehow, or abandon it.
My bot is only online when I am online, hell, I basically watch all the trades that it completes while I do something else. The bot is for my convenience, it's not really anymore convenient than a typical trader for the other person.
Due to the counter proof provided, there seems to be more sellers at the current range then your new range. The current range is fine. Just leave it alone bro. **** the Frying Pans, Save the God Dang Keys. Sheesh.
The price of the keys it getting out of hand, this is WAY to expensive.
K, find us some counterproof then we'll pay attention to you
So everyone, I know you don't like key prices going up, but commenting "oh noes, too many greedy people, too expensive, etc." isn't going to help at all. Find some counterproof (keys bought/sold at 5 or 5.11) or post something useful. Stop spamming, you guys are just making fools of yourselves.
And I would like to point out, "exploded lately" does not equal a 1 scrap increase :P

Post this on the new suggestion.
The 5-5.33? I did :)
Keys are all over the place. Thankfully I only casually trade keys for metal.
Bought 2 keys for 5 ref - http://puu.sh/34YSH/d143f4ab81.png
Sold for 5.66 - http://puu.sh/34YWF/ca4c346b65.png
Sold for 5.55 - http://puu.sh/34YX0/f5e0bc88f6.png
Sold for 5.55 - http://puu.sh/34YXL/af8ebf6bd2.png
Sold for 5.55 each - http://puu.sh/34YYA/556adfe6eb.png
I could probably sell all of my keys for 5.55+ but y'know, metal is junk. Use this proof whichever way you want.
The truth is the only people who are still buying keys are traders, and they don't care about metal.
You only have 10 Keys. After you sell them for a higher price, next week the prices of Keys would be higher. Whats the point of making the price go higher?
Here are my 5 Refined Sale Trades
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11121776 - 2 Keys
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/10975761
I know some of them were 1 Week ago but you guys should know what I'm trying to say
5 ref should still be in range, downvote.
You're welcome to provide objective evidence as to why
I meant 5.11
just had a trade on op where i was selling 4 keys for 5.44 each, 3 adds in 5 minutes - sold out
Providing the link. http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11291815
Ok, 5.44 is a "quicksell." Conclusion: 5.44 should not be in the range.
Digging the meme :D
LOL u found it on 9gog??? ur king of meme's
I made it myself actually.
ur king of meme's
it was 3 ref some months ago
First time I scored a point :D
This price is accurate. I buy keys for 5.22 on a trade, and I get the occassional customer but only about 1 a day. http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/10986248
If you don't agree with the suggested
1) Get some keys
2) Put them up on outpost for 5.11
3) See how long it takes to sell
4) Reflect on whether or not 5.11 should be in the range.
I guarantee they will be sold within minutes.
i got 5 keys at 5 ref each yeasterday
post some evidence then.
ok, http://puu.sh/36QIc.png
only 4 :/
Its weird that everyone has so much counter proof from a few days ago... when this suggestion is only 16 hours old. Proof 2 days ago might as well be a week or a month ago. Here is currently *at this moment* what people are selling them for within this suggested spread. Most prices out of the 400+ listings are 5.55 - 5.66 with 6 ref keys shortly behind those. The locusts insta buy keys as soon as they appear, so blink and you miss them.
Out of 400+ listings there are only 20 listings that meet the spread. Making me think 5.44 ref is the quicksell price.

No no no no no. Prices keep going up because people use backpack.tf as proof to raise their outpost prices... Then people use those tf2outpost people who are selling for 1 scrap more to proof more raises, repeat.
C'Mon guys, don't let this happen.
Always happens, it'd the curse of backpack.tf- price manipulators!
Oh, I want 1 scrap profeet, then I'm going to go find someone selling for cheaper than me *Buys all their keys, sells back at more*
Same thing's happening on the market atm...
I vote we price-lock to 3 ref and everyone cries for 5 minutes and then the economy's FIXED!
EDIT: Just wondering- Why doesn't tf2finance use some of the convict gaming servers? I tend to trade there- I've seen so many 5.11 sales you wouldn't believe...
Meh, if you want the price to drop then stop buying keys, let demand fall and supply raise, and they'll go down eventually.
This morning I went on Outpost to buy some keys and could not even find someone selling keys for 5.22 so I said to my self I might as well buy like 10 keys from the Mann.co store and then sell them for like 5 refined each and I bet they would all sell in one day and I would have 50 refined to spend on tod tickets or hats.
i like how people like him think that just because some poeple buy keys for increased price means they go up in price.
now before you go hating on me,i have to say that this isnt the first time that there is a similiar suggestion for the rise of the key price.
i bought a ton of keys for 5 ref and it didnt seem so hard to find sellers.
so with that said,i expect to see the price to fall.
"I bought a ton of keys for 5 ref and it didn't seem so hard to find sellers"
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/10642287
You literally say that you have bought 3 Keys in a single week. I'm sorry, but allow me to laugh insanely hard
Each key weighs a third of a ton!
At least this guy buys and sells keys, unlike the authors of 95% of these terrible, terrible comments.
i got like 9 more trades but didnt have metal sooo yeahhh....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtOPacnjxLU
In my personal preferences, the rise in keys is horse shit, but you've provided ample evidence, so upvote
Upvoting, hard to find keys for 5.22, much less anything below that
I've been selling keys at 5.44 at the outpost a few different times this week, they all went within the minute and i've now people begging me to keep them added for when i sell more at that price.
Upvote, a week ago i tried selling 2 keys for 5.33, i got 6 people adding me in TWO MINUTES!!
When I said I couldn't make a complaint, I meant that the proof is provided, and keys seem to be raising. Upvoted.
but please check out the counter proof at the comments, there is still a lot of sells even at 5 ref.
You'll only be able to get those keys at 5-5.11 if you're refreshing OP repeatedly or waiting on trade servers to snipe keys. Hell even 5.22 is a bitch.
hell even 5.44 is a bitch --- now. Please sell me keys for 5.44 :(
There are still sellers for 5-5.22 range...but they are so few and far in between, but I found a person on a trade server selling keys for 5 ref, didn't take pics because I was shocked that a 5 ref seller is not so endangered than I thought.
Is it just me or does anyone else think that this key suggestion is actually outdated as is...? I hate saying that (#savethakeysguise), but from what I've seen, 5.44 is pretty much a quicksell at this point. I have issues even making an attempt to buy at 5.22.
mate I am having trouble buying at 5.44, I have to buy at 5.55.
I hate having to admit that I am as well. >.<
I myself just sold a key at 5.44 refined, so I have to go with this.
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11344590 5 ref still shows up, this was on my first search \=
i'm not 100% sold on the low range yet but this is good proof and supported by the metrics i usually look at (which are not all outpost)
i also wanted to commend you for being so civil this time around. many thanks for that
Thank you.
I agree for making the Mann Co. supply crate keys a higher price. Many people on tf2outpost.com prefer to sell it for more than 5.33.
One thing I always here from people that ramp up the price of keys is that it "has to be done" or "someone has to do it" or "it must be done".
I don't know what's up with that, really, but it's very clear now that greed is behind the price of keys going up. to me this whole pricing system seems like a big communist scandal, but with team fortress 2.
People are gonna probably vote down on this post just for "revealing" something we already know, and acting like it's something that everyone knows.
Basically what I'm saying here is I don't trust backpack.tf anymore. it's obvious why anyone shouldn't. backpack.tf will tell you how much your backpack is apparently worth based on the prices given to items, and the prices are determined by what people will easily buy them on TF2 Outpost. (don't forget the proof, like always). Referring back to my "communist scandal" claim.
[assumption] You have a extremely large (and secret) group of people who are out for greed. Influencing people to vote different prices on backpack.tf by going on TF2 outpost and selling stuff. Of coarse this process starts small so nobody actually knows where a price on a certain item actually started to rise.
And If that isn't true, then it surely is plausible because I know a group of people trying to lower the price of keys by getting people to sell keys on TF2 outpost for 2.33, and using that as proof. Of coarse you think the dollar scratchers back at backpack.tf are gonna say up-vote to that?! Not in a millions wallets!
So go ahead and say i'm stupid, and I don't know anything about the economy. Because guess what? I'm not gonna listen to you're lies anymore. I know plenty of people who think backpack.tf is a scam.
I'm gonna buy my keys for 2.33 and sell them for 2.33 because that was the price, it is the price, and it will be the price, and i'm gonna hear people proclaim "I'm not giving you my key for 2.33". and I'll say, "well why not?". and he'll say "because they are worth 5.33 refined, and I don't want to loose any profit...". And i'll say "Who says your gonna loose profit??"; "backpack.tf" he says. "Ohhhh, no, thats the price they want you to pay". That person can either believe me, or 'you'. I think its safer for that guy to believe me.
I think you should keep opinion out of this, and this is a fully capitalist market...
Greed has been behind the rise of everything on any market - if you're selling above a price determined as "normal" and people are willing to buy it regularly, you'd be stupid not to raise your prices. Buy low, sell high is the name of the game.
Your not getting it. Yes there is greed in any market but this is different, this is special, because we have a price listing in other words a spreadsheet, like a real market would and just like a real market, if there is disagreement because prices are to high it will be met with opposition because, what use to be affordable no longer is this suggestion is change the price of currency different just some item, there's a consequence involved and well i'll stop here if you don't get it by now i not gonna waste more of my time.
You forget one thing. If a player has bought his key for 5 ref now, He wont sell it to you for 2.33 ref even if he wanted to. Why?
Because he would almost lose half of his investment.
That is not players being greedy that is people not wanting to be screwed over.
That is one parameter you seem to forget completly. Everybody that has bought a key for these 5+ prices also has everything to lose if the price would go down.
Basically they are all (both sellers and buyers ) trapped in limbo.
Both buyers and sellers thatare buying at 5+ ref right now will lose on your suggestion.
You are saying there are groups that sell and buy for 2.33 ref. That is true, but they are almost everytime small groups(invite only-rule) where they know eachother.
That can be compared to when I let a friend irl borrow my unusal hat when he was playing. That doesnt mean the unusal all of a sudden was worth nothing.
I dont like the keyprices going up. For me the math doesnt end up.
This Christmas we had 380 000 keys, now we have over 500 000 keys. Still the price is going up despite the refined not increasing at same rate.
But for me the answer to why,the price goes up is very simple, the demand.
Somewhere last year, keysellers realised that keys had a much higher demand then what they thought. And that demand is going as of this day. As long as the demand is there, prices will go up.
It is a shame thow, I noticed how some players have to basically melt down their entire backpack in order to get ONE key. Honestly I wonder how a new player can ever start building a fortune in this game.
At this rate, keys will become so expensive that the economy crashes. No offense, but the voting system of backpack.tf is a major cause of that because as key prices rise, a lot of people sell it for a little higher price than what backpack.tf says. Then we vote on a new price for keys and since people keep selling them for higher prices, it's a never ending cycle. Either make key prices a static value in order to make it a stable currency or watch the economy go down the ****hole.
I already wrote this (Or to some effect) Just got downvoted :(
Sorry to hear that, maybe the butt-hurts that make profit from the current state of the economy don't want it to go back to normal. What they don't realize is that eventually their "profit" will cease to exist because the game will die out if the trading aspect is to disappear because of how significant hats, miscs, and items in general are to TF2.
Excellent point. A lot of the time people pay a scrap or so extra for a key because they want the key and realize they're losing a tiny bit of backpack value in order to obtain it. Since, well, keys are used to open crates and all.
So, I just opened a trade on TF2 Outpost. 5.22 for a key. 3 people added me in TWENTY-ONE seconds.
FUCKING GOOD PROOF
upvote :P (sorry fore my language)
Is this supposed to reflect actual prices or recommended prices that people think are fair?
You're going to need much more conclusive proof than that (even though it SEEMS like a lot) before we deflate the second-most used currency in the game.
I'm increasing the price, not deflating.
Also, look at some comments I have posted. I've posted more links to make my proof more "conclusive"
Inflation is when money has less buying power -- meaning, keys are worth less refined because they can't buy as much refined as they could before.
You're suggesting the opposite. The opposite of inflation is deflation.
Lrn2Economy
As for conclusiveness, I don't see enough proof to counter the 5-5.11 ref counter someone gave earlier.
I'm not against currency deflation, I just don't see quite enough proof to convince me to upvote your suggestion.
Well, here is what I think. The definition of inflating: A general increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of money. And I'm suggesting to increase. Also, thank for telling me to learn the economy. Considering this is coming from a F2P, a person with a 2.5 Key backpack, a person with absolutely no apparent knowledge in key trades let alone trading in general, and somebody who has a troll classified listing in which you selling a Ghostly Gibus for 8008135 Buds, and also disliked my comment, I'm not going to take much out of you. You're biased.
Basically, you can downvote if you want, as I don't really care.
k
so you admit you were wrong about the definition of inflation and deflation
too long didn't read the rest
i was the one who dis liked your comment.
good proof, upvote
I've been buying for 5.33 and selling higher 5.44 - 5.55. upvote.
please not again... the key price should go down, not up
Why should it go down?
Yet, it does go up. I thought it was because of bp.tf too before, but actually once I got into the key trade I realised the webpage is actually lagging behind.
I guess it might stop rising at some point, but I think unless some major patch comes changing things on idling, crating and/or drops, it wont.
That is called price manipulation.
It's actually called making a profit, a common thing in the world. Price manipulating is selling a bunch of keys to a group you know for cheap to make bp.tf or another place lower the price.
Is there really a difference in the two then? I mean we vote on the price changes based on the evidence a person has on a new price right? So if enough people like Jokosaa sell keys like this (which there already are hence the key price skyrocket), then it's a never-ending cycle leading to massive inflation, which again has happened drastically ever since the keys were sold in the community market.
Oh joy, and here I was thinking maybe the key prices had stabilized. But no, some people gotta mess it up.
http://i.imgur.com/jpOkluB.png
5.11
dont you also get cheaper keys because you give them 5 ref and free noclip on the server you own?
Don't do that anymore. Now you have to pay 1 scrap for noclip, and actually I don't own the server, I'm just a mod. Occasionally key trades come by that place and I trade with them.
How do I bring up this on my trade chat or must it be done in a certain way? I sell at 5.0 or less.
Just take a screenie and post it :)
Made a trade for keys 5.33 and instantly had 4 trades. After less than 3 minutes I had 15.
Made a trade at 5.0, was selling as many as I had, after less than 3 seconds sold out.
http://i.imgur.com/OF79ERK.jpg
if this doesn't stop soon we will be at 6 refined, and nobody will buy keys anymore because they are too expensive
why do you think its a good idea to keep raising the price
U guys are also adding to the inflation FYI...
The Steps to Inflation:
1) Backpack.tf and other spreadsheet sites get a general idea of prices by taking an average and setting it a little higher
2) Noobs (65% of tf2 users) see the price and start selling at that price.
3) Backpack.tf and other spreadsheet sites get the new average and notice being sold for the amount they posted and raise it a little more
4) Process repeats forever and then increases exponentially as Valve creates the Community Steam Store (leading to a decrease of new keys being bought from the tf2 store)
RESULT: Crap economy and inflation
CONCLUSION: Spreadsheets and Valve's new ideas can suck sometimes -_-
FYI, bp.tf has been lagging way behind the actual sales since the new cooldown rule came out, especially because all the suggestions get closed because of counterproof made up of the Noobs (65% of tf2 users) that sell at 5-5.11 because bp.tf says so...
Why are keys just raising in price so fast lately? Please i need someone to explain this to me, i need an adult.
Basicly, keys have become the backbone of the economy, and refined is dropping like a rock, so keys increase in value in relation to refined. It's a pretty clear correlation, because hats that were worth one ref are still one ref and hats that were worth one key are still one key, regardless of the key to refined value.
thank you for responding, i now have a better view of this situation.
I know for a fact that there are people still selling for 5.0.
I am one of them.
Just because people are willing to sell for 5.44 doesn't mean people will buy.
You often see now people buying for the current range in trade servers and several getting it for 5.22.
I have yet to see anybody selling for a reasonable price on trade servers at all therefore they must be extremes which is what you are suggesting they go to.
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11289416
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11227233
There are many people fed up with the price of keys and are selling at lower prices, they sell so fast that they don't appear on searches. 5.0-5.3 is more accurate.
Well, those people aren't legit sellers, just price manipulators.
Oh, and 5.44 sells well, there are a lot of buyers at 5.44.
Buyers that have run out of metal, and bots which don't count as proof.
Alrighty, so let's examine your buyers
Alright, let's count the # of proof for 5.44 shall we? From Doopliss's suggestion:
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11106759- sold out (bought out actually)
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11076954- bot, invalid
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/10793659- ok
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/10443491- bot, invalid
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11026488- sold out
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11260227- ok
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11341841- sold out (or maybe bought out...?)
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11334777- bought out
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11310957- ok
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11182553- ok
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11355047- bought out
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11354621- ok
So it seems many are bots and many of the buyers get "bought out"
yeah, you know that would make sense, selling a key for a fair price and it selling after a few bumps.
"Fair price"
If the buyers ran of metal, that means people were just too eager to sell for 5.44 does it not?
After a few hours, not after a few seconds. Why are bots invalid on outpost, they act like any other trader, also one of the bot owners has said the trades only hapen when he is online, making it exactly the same as an outpost trader.
>Bot, invalid. I AM A REAL PERSON

Why won't you give up, your suggestion just got closed... Unless it turns out that you closed it yourself.
My suggestion got closed because the mod said 1 rec range was still too wide even though he told me himself I could make that suggestion.
And my suggestion doesn't affect me being able to post this does it?
No, it doesn't. Hm... that's weird that he just closed it after giving permission to start it. He should have at least given you a chance.
Vincent clearly said your suggestion was closed because of the abundance of buyers at 5.22. He may have given permission to have a wide range but your proof didn't back up that range.
Ok, so you guys are ignoring the fact that they were successful trades and instead focusing on what they could've done.
they're all sold out.

Just a couple links @ 5.33ref+. So the question remains, with so many people willing to pay 5.33ref, why do people sell for <5.33ref? Are they quicksells?
The current does not truly cover the the market.
IMO the sales distribution is skewed towards the 5.44-5.55 ref end, for now this suggestion will suffice, it is more accurate than the current range.

Those were found on the first page of a key search, on outpost. During that time, no <5.33ref trades appeared, one 5.33 ref trade appeared and despite me adding within the first 20 seconds, he has not accepted. Sooooo.
Latest proof of 5.55 ref trades @
http://imgur.com/a/rXu2P
Does not include most 1/2/3 key purchases.
As I said, the bot is only online when I am, I watch most of the trades take place, it's there for my convenience.
5.33 is in the current range. Get rid of the 5.33 ones. Also, anything over 5.44 is counterproof to this suggestion.
5.33 is on the edge of the current range, when in the market it is closer to the median value.
Anything over 5.44 proves that the current range is inaccurate, while also proving that this range is more accurate, as anything over 5.44 ref counters any proof you provide under 5.22 ref.
Not really, since anything over 5.44 is showing this trade is wrong.
The sale prices form a distribution, unless you had a range of 5-5.66ref, then there is going to be inaccuracies in the range. The whole point of this site is to give a guide of the prices. The current range is inaccurate, this proposed range is more accurate than the current.
By showing trades above the suggested price I am proving that trades do occur above the range, as you are proving that trades do occur below the suggested price. The largest percentage of trades occur in the suggested range, I am merely counterproofing your counterproof, by showing that there are 2 tails to the distribution. The suggested range is good.
Doesn't matter if it's more accurate than current, either you get a key suggestion right, or you don't accept it. And 5-5.11 is still possible, as the counter has shown.
The key suggestion is as correct as it's going to get, unless 5-5.55/5-5.66 is accepted, which we've already seen it won't be. This is the next best thing, instead of focusing on the entire distribution, focus on the highly concentrated area.
The bulk of the trades occur in this range, this should be the new range. Simple as that.
Just because trades occur above and below does not make it an incorrect range, simply makes it an incomplete one, with both sides being cut off.
Either suggest 5-5.55/5-5.66 ref and accept it or accept this. The current range is inaccurate and does not reflect a large proportion of the market.
Already tried 5-5.44. Didn't work, and with keys, you get it right or you simply don't accept it. Also, 5.55 and 5.66...do you have proof of those sales that doesn't involve bots?
Again with the bot comment, not sure if you've completely ignored what I have said about the bot, but whatever.
5-5.44 was an incorrect range, 5.55 sales were still occurring regularly, you were unfairly leaving a value out of the distribution.
It seems as though you are repeating the same arguments without actually reading what I am saying, so this will be my last comment.
Look for the proof yourself, you will easily find it.
This current suggestion correctly reflects the bulk of the markets sale price distribution. Simple as that. The current price does not reflect the market sale price distribution. Simple as that. Perhaps I should draw you a graph?
Good luck with your impossible crusade, keys have risen and the price guide needs to reflect it to be accurate.
So I see 11 links at 5.55 and 5.66.
Versus..what...at least 100+links at 5-5.11?
Alright, had to comment to this. Number of links =/= Number of keys
Do the maths, some simple addition. Perhaps I should just draw you a graph to show you why it's acceptable to drop both tails off, the number of keys sold in both regions are roughly equal. Thus, we can cut the tails off and report the densest part of the distribution so that the range isn't as large.
Also, judging by the number of links I provided of buyers @ 5.33ref, I'd say 5.11 and 5 are quick sells. But ya know, come up with another poorly weighted argument for those.
Ok, you say the number of links =/= number of keys sold.
I know, but can you show me the links that aren't bot sales?
Aditionally, you say 5-5.11 ref is a quicksell. True, but any key at 5.33 is still sold at the same speed as 5.33. So should 5.33 be eliminated from the range? Keys are different than other items, a key at 5.33 is going to "quicksell" because keys are in constant demand. And even then, proof at 5-5.11>proof at 5.44-5.55
Sigh, if you must be difficult, trades I found in the last 2 hours. Note, NONE below 5.33ref came up, most of the 5.33ref were bought by me.

These would be quicksells on the new range you're providing us, further supporting that 5.11 is outdated.
this is getting to crazy keys need to stop rising in price, a year or two back they were like 2.33-3 ref now its 5.11-5.33, next thing you know keys are going to be like 10 ref, the only thing i'm saying is that this inflation needs to stop.
Two years ago Keys were 1 Ref. Get your facts straight.
I'm staying neutral on this...never know what will happen, a lot of negative votes, but admins might accept.
5 ref is still possible.
This is my trade:
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11231690
Opened 5 days ago and had 2 people sell me 2 keys for 5 ref each. I can show further proof if you need me.
Uh, 4 Keys in 5 days while other guys trade 200+ Keys per day.
5.66 Ref is also possible, yet it's not included in the new range.
Yes, but by excluding 5 ref in the range, that means that 5 ref trades are quicksells.
They are already quicksells.
5-5.11 Ref = Mostly Quicksellers
5.55-5.66 Ref = Mostly Quickbuyers
The average/normal price is between QS and QB, more than the half of allKey:Ref trades happen in this range.
Do you have any proof to back this up? Show me some trades.
http://puu.sh/36Em4.png
Well im not pro trader but, when i started playing tf2 keys were 2.66 and it was cool because you could play some time and get key, that's why chance of geting unusual was bigger then than know, because more players were buying keys. Now when keys are so expensive many players just rather want to buy normal verison of their hat or buy keys from mann co. I am an average trader and this price is not good but i wonder what if(just saying this maybe happen maybe not) keys will reach price for exapmle 8 ref will average players with 300 slots in bp will be still buying them? Ofcourse you may not agree with me but i just want to remind you when keys were about to hit 3 ref many contribiutors were saying that keys will never reach 4 ref and look today we've got keys getting more than 5 ref
Nobody forces you to buy keys, you don't need them (or hats) to play the fucking game..
*sigh*
remember when everyone was bitching about keys being 4 ref? good times...
Sorry, I dont have enought time to proofe it,but sure- they are sellers for 5.22 or more, but I wasnt able to sell it with that price.
I found buyer at 5.11.
You are not even registered on TF2OP or TF2B.
You found a buyer @ 5.11 ref? Wow.
Guess what, you just found a buyer for 1 scrap. Yeah, I'll pay 1 scrap for keys. Iz gud prof?
In the hours I have been sniping keys, I have not seen one for less than 5.33 ref and if I do not add within 20 seconds of them posting, then the 5.33ref keys are sold.
I have no idea where all these magically 5-5.22ref sellers are because I have not encountered ONE.
I saw one guy who was selling one Key for 5.11 Ref. Btw. he told me that he was added by 11 guys, excluding me, in the first minute.
Iz quik sell
I bought 2 from this guy on my trade for 5 ref.
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11204745
And 4 for 5.11
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11297917
The prices of keys have exploded lately because in a way the drops of items have seemed to increase Take Meet the stats:http://stats.teamfortress.org/ every 30 seconds i timed that there are 114 drops. These 114 drops seem to entice more players to play and continue. Over time these stuck items clog up backpacks and players look for a more reliable way and they turn to keys.
Now its up to Supply and Demand the more demand( where http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11385311 5.66 sold over 180
http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/10803485 5.55 sold quite some lot however there are the people that offer the items are those that start form the very weapon crafting which links back to my first point look around and you will see desperaate offers
A reasonable price for the rising keys should be 4.88 ref and 5 ref
This is because the people that want 5.66-6 ref are the ones also raising the price and the more keys raise the more they will destroy the economy aka lose players that trade
you do need to realise that there is a maximum to key prices right. we're about to be reaching that limit so rises won't be as abrupt anymore. stop messing with things and play the game!
You obviously don't give a fuck about the proof which has been posted by the suggester, eh?
You have good proof, and I respect that. So I upvoted. I'm disgusted with key traders, though. They are destroying the tf2 economy.
These prices are just crazy. Last year key worth something like 2.66-3 ref. 2 more years and key will worth 10 ref!!!
It used to be 2.33 ref and now... just wow
I can see he has 15 keys in his backpack, so he wants to profit
Damn, he has 15 keys in his backpack and only wants profit so he suggested to increase keys? He already provided multiple links of people paying the high-end of 5.44 refined, how exactly would he profit anymore with the price of 5.11-5.33 refined, than a price of 5.22-5.44 refined? Fixing an inaccurate price on an item you own does not mean you're in it for profit. Especially when you have multiple people who were already will to pay 5.44 refined which would be the 'profit' you are talking about.
Took the words right out of my mouth.
I'm going to downvote because I can regularly buy keys at 5 and 5.11, but I use trade servers rather than outpost so can't really prove it.
Nice try, but take some screenshots of your trade history to prove it: http://steamcommunity.com/id/NakedBistro/inventoryhistory

What I'm trying to get at is that Keys are indeed rising, however much some of you guys hate it. Most Keys may not be selling at 5.66, but they are definitely rising as 5.55's are a steady price and most people are paying 5.33 for keys. Want proof for 5.33?

Anyways, good luck with the suggestion. My Proof may be crap as I'm fairly new to this, but the price is rising, that is for sure.
Your proof was very good. :)
There really wasn't too much proof at 5.44+, and I soon found that most were selling/buying at 5.33+-, which is where I got this price suggestion. I'm guessing in a week or two 5.55 will be more apparent, and the price will be adjusted accordingly.
